A full scholarship to study Chemical Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST) has been offered by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) to Benjamin Darko, the brilliant secondary school graduate whose impressive 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results went viral online.
The Executive Director of the GNPC Foundation, Dr. Dominic Eduah, made the announcement of the scholarship package during a meeting with Darko and his family today at the office of the Vice Chancellor (VC) of KNUST.
He said the Foundation’s Education & Training unit is providing the support to restore young Darko’s hopes and has, in cooperation with its educational partners, initiated steps to facilitate his successful admission in the University’s next enrolment window.
Despite earning 5As and 3Bs in his science coursework at Presbyterian Senior Secondary School (PRESEC) – Legon, the bright 21-year-old’s desire to enroll in a medical-science-related degree at the university has been hampered by a lack of funding.
The lad from Bepowase, a farming town in Akuapim North Municipality of the Eastern Region, has since 2021 taken on a number of menial tasks in a somewhat challenging attempt to save for his schooling. He does this to keep himself active and to give his aspirations a chance.
