Rita Wilson was born Margarita Ibrahimoff and was raised in Los Angeles. Dorothea Tzigkou, her mother, was Greek and was born and raised in Sotir, an Albanian town adjacent to Dropull I Siprm and the Greek border.
Her father, Hassan Halilov Ibrahimoff, was a Muslim (Pomak) from Bulgaria who was born in the Greek town of Oraio (Breshtene), not far from the Bulgarian frontier. When her father was a young boy, his family emigrated to Bulgaria. In 1949, he relocated from Bulgaria to the US.
After getting married, he converted from Islam to Orthodox Christianity, and in 1960, he changed his name to Allan Wilson, naming himself after a nearby neighbourhood. Wilson’s father worked as a waiter in Los Angeles, where the family resided. Wilson was brought up as a Greek Orthodox Christian.
Tom Hanks, Wilson’s husband, claimed that her father could speak “Russian, Turkish, Polish, Greek, a little bit of Italian, a little bit of French” in addition to Bulgarian. Hanks also claimed that his father-in-law served as the inspiration for the character Viktor Navorski in the movie The Terminal.
